Needing A GU

In the ultrarunning world there are high highs and low lows. And the way out of it for me initially is to take a GU. Well my GU right now is to excercise. Whether it is stretching or strength or whatever. You have to understand, running was something that I was the most passionate about and to take it away I have nothing to sill it with. But, I felt really good after hoppping on the stationary bike at my house. I was only going to go for 5 - 10 minutes but ended up going for 30 minutes until I felt a little, and I mean little, pain. So I hopped off. But it felt great. I felt like crap for most of the day due to minor issues but when I was home and started to excercise I felt that endorphin rush kick in. Whoo hoo!! I think I am bouncing back out of this low low. I also like to talk to my wife and play with my children, they help me out. But my injury has caused that to be in kahootz(fake word?) I cant chase after my Kaili and I can’t really play with my Malia. I can talk to my wife, which does help, after a little calming down. Anyway I feel a little better. Now I must ride. Those endorphins are calling me.

Devon,
Do you swim at all? Swimming (while admittably terminally boring) is a great all around conditioner. I swim/bike/run and I firmly believe it makes me a better athlete than if I just ran. Legs tired one day? Go swim. Upper body sore? Go run. Joints hurt? Go bike (no impact).

I hate road biking as we have crappy roads out here and you're always playing tag with the cars, so I've gotten into Mountain biking, which I really love. Mountain biking is to road biking what trail running is to road running. And for swimming, we are blessed with easy access to the Ocean if you don't like pool swimming. (Which I don't because of the aforementioned bordem, plus the chlorine and it's usually crowded)It's better to go to the North Shore and swim at Waimea or even down to Ala Moana or Waikiki. Then you get to see fish and turtles and enjoy HI at the same time.
My point is....if you need to exercise, don't feel that you're stuck if you can't run (as far or as fast or as much as you would like). You have other avenues open to you and they will make you a stronger athlete anyway.
