Here are some photos that i have been meaning to post. Some are from before I left for California while swimming at the pool with Malia and some of them are from the other day when my brother Jack flew in on the plane he works on for the Air Force. He looked great. He came in from a small island which is a part of Japan. I then spent the night with my friend Mike running in the mountains preparing for Peacock 54. We spent about 7 hours going 22 miles. From 1830-0330 Friday into Saturday. Also, there is a pic of my Mom in California and some Lilys that were in the middle of a vacant lot in Pacific Grove, CA.

Adventuring after an Adventure

After an awesome night trek up around Tantalus with Mike the night before (15mi). It was great to get a good hike with my Amy and Malia and Kiki. We had fun doing a 4 mile out and back hike to the bridge on Kaunala Loop Trail. We picked strawberry guava and took photos of plants. We hope you enjoy the video it isn't much but it is worth watching. Mine and Amys classes are going great. Malia is doing well in school and is enjoying soccer. Kaili is talking alot and loves to go to the runnning store with me. Kiki is about 60 lbs now and is going to get a hair cut soon. Talk sotry later. Bless.

Here are some more pics of the family. Malia took the ones of the rainbow and the GIANT hermit crab. The other ones are of Kaili ready for the water and us in front of the weinermobile:) Anyway we hope everyone had a great fourth of July. We went to Turtle Bay and Kaili freaked out I ended up holding her and she fell asleep for a litttle bit. I also ran the Firecracker 10 mile out at Kaena Point. It was a blast. I came in in like 2:05 or something. Amy and the girls hung out at the start/finish with Kiki. My friends Sean and Tracy brought their aussie too and Kiki and her played in the tidepools together. He is wore out:) I also may have found a pacer for AC 100. He is a friend of mine from HURT, Mike Muench. He is a great guy. I hope he can make it. Well talk story later. Bless.

California Running Adventure

I flew out of Honolulu at 2200 on June 4, 2009 after saying my goodbyes to my family. I flew all night not sleeping at all and landed in San Francisco at 0700 on June 5. My mom met me a the airport to give me a ride to her house in Salinas, CA so I could use her car. We made our way to Palo Alto where the Zombies were meeting me early before the Zombie Runner store actually opened. They had my paper bag full of goodies all ready ready. We finally made it to Salinas at 1300. I had 7 hours to drive down to Santa Barbara and pick up my race packet for the Blue Canyon Trail Race and also set up my tent and find m tent site. It took me about 3.5 hours or so to drive down to Santa Barbara arriving at 1800 I thought I could use the spare time to find my tent site and set up my tent and then head into town and find this pre-race spaghetti dinner I heard about. So I set up my tent and finally found the pre-race briefing. I met a lot of nice people and ate some great pasta. I got back to my campsite at Rancho Oso at 2200. Getting to bed at 2300 was not the best time. I slept for a little while and then awoke to a noise outside my tent at 0300. I got out of the tent and went to the trunk of my car only to hear the pitter patter of footsteps behind me. I turned around with my headlamp on and there were four raccoons eyeing me down like a piece of freshly scrapped garbage. Then two more around the front of the car jumped on the hood and then the roof. I closed the trunk and thought they might go away if I went to the bathroom. I walked to the bathroom and they followed me. Finally I went inside and I could hear the dumpster being rustled.

BCTR 50K (34 Miles) June 6th 2009

I got to the start at 0500 and saw the 100K runners head off into t he night. I was kinda nervous and a bit cold. This being my first ultra since my surgery and it having 10000 feet of gain and loss, I felt a bit intimidated. But hell it is "only" 34 miles After hanging out for awhile and talking to a few people I decided to get my stuff ready now that it was daylight. I walked over to the car and got my things together then walked to the only bathroom and went. Now I was ready. We were told to follow the blue ribbons. Now in Hawaii, blue means bad, but here I had to follow the blue. The altitude wasn't that much of a factor but the elevation certainly was. I went out really fast and was passing all these runners walking. They were like, "catch up to you later" And they did… Anyway, we made our way around camp through the piles and piles of horse manure and around and through the many poison oak bushes all along the trail. We then began to climb, and climb, and climb, etc…we got to the "top" and the view was amazing. I was taking lots of pictures. The trail turned from fire road to singletrack at the first aid station, which like a few of them, was unmanned. But, they had everything from GU to carbo Pro. The water was in some kind of pump thing and I did not know how to work it so I did not get any water. I knew, or thought, I would be fine until the next AS. We then meandered our way rolling through the country side. It was amazing I felt so alive. I wanted to share it with so many people that is why I took so many pictures We then had this major climb that just never seemed to end. We had to bushwhack our way through quite a few sections and some sections the trail gave way on the side of a nasty cliff. But other than that the views were amazing. I could see Gibraltar reservoir in the distance and I thought we had to run to it, but it seemed so very far away and we were going away from it. We got to the top of the climb and turned left down the fire road. I was like awesome some thing runnable and it is downhill. Also, I was out of water. In a few short minutes I was at the next AS. There were two guys there and they had flannel jackets on, huh… I quickly reloaded and headed down to the turnaround. I had five miles of awesome downhill it was great. But, when it is an out and back going down means you have to go back up. And that is what I did. After making it to the turn around there was confusion where the turnaround was. I had my GPS on so I knew that this was the turnaround. The AS captain also told me that it was the turnaround but runners were going two mile further where the drop bags were and turning around. They said that it was written in GU, but there was no one there, except the drop bags were there. Anyway, I turned around and headed back up the long 5 mile uphill. The clouds began to roll in and it got cold. I put my Moeben sleeves on and continued my climb. Heading back the same way I came I ran as fast as I could, but my stomach was giving me problems. I don't remember names very well, but some one gave me a mint and that seemed to help. I got back to were we first hit the singletrack and thought great we are almost there. A little downhill and I am home. WRONG!!!!! I turned left, (following the blue ribbons) and headed up, and I mean UP the mountain. I climbed for awhile and began to believe that I must have taken the wrong way. But just then a 50 mile runner passed me by looking strong. I finally got to the top and was completely out of water. I crested a bump and saw a truck roof, the AS, it must be an AS, and it was. They were dressed in down jackets and we could see our breath. I got some ginger ale and immediately headed down the last 3 miles of singletrack to the finish. It was beautiful to come out of the woodline and see the finish. I ran hard to the finish and let the guy who gave me the mint go ahead of me to the finish ( not wanting to be a jerk and sprint past him). I finished in 10:03.

I hung out until the last 100K runners finished at about 2100, then I packed up my campsite, not wanting to battle the coons again, and headed back to Salinas. I started the 4 hour drive and an hour into it I pulled over and took another hour to find a hotel with a room. I found a rinky dink motel and asked the lady behind the glass for a room. She said that she had one more room. She then asked how much I had when I asked how much it was going to be. I said I have $50. She said make it $5 more and you can have it. Being the sucker that I am I gave her the $55 and slept for 4 hours until 0500. I then got up and started the rest of my drive. I stopped at Dennys and got something to eat. The rest of my drive was uneventful.

I got to my moms and spent the week recuperating and thinking about my next race. I actually fell asleep while stretching I headed out on Friday June 12th toward Los Angeles. It was a 6 hour drive to LA. I made it into LA and stayed with my friend at his house so I would not have to camp in the freezing cold of Big Bear Lake. He took me all over LA and I also went to Phidepeddes, the oldest running store somewhere I left his house on Saturday and headed to a hotel at the base of the mountain. I was an hour from Serrano Campground, where the start of the race was. I ot to sleep at 2300 and got up 0400. I headed up the mountain at 0430.

Holcomb Valley Trail Run 33 Miler June 14th 2009

This race has only 7000' of elevation but it all above 7000' in altitude. I got to the start at about 0600. The race started at 0700. I got my adventure pass( something you need to park within the park) and my shirt and got the hell back in my car. It was freaking like 30 degrees. The race had a staggered start and I was in the second wave that started at 0702. After a quick briefing and after the first wave my wave started. I started out pretty well, but my toes were numb and I ended up falling on my face in the first 2 miles. The race continued to roll all around the mountain with great view of Big Bear Lake and snow capped mountains in the background. The highlight of my tip was running on the Pacific Crest Trail. This was a dream of mine. Here I was all over the PCT. I took my time running and taking pictures and trying to drink up the beauty surrounding me. I even met the lady who invented the Moeben sleeves, which I was wearing. The AS were awesome but very minimal with some awesome homemade Chocolate Chip cookies. At the only AS with a cutoff I was 45 minutes ahead so I took my time going up the final major climb which was long and brutal. It was so hard to breathe. I was sucking wind. This was the most runnable and easiest if it hadn't been for the altitude. Anyway, I cruised into the finish at 8:45 and got my finishers award. It was a great way to spend the day. I couldn't stick around though. I had to drive 3 hours to the LA airport to pick up my friend who are in a reggae band from Kauai and are touring Southern California.

So it takes me 3 hours to get to the airport. I have not showered and I really stink. I hang out until they get there at 2100 and we head to San Diego. We get to the hotel to check in at 0100. I am freaking exhausted. We cruise the next day and end up hanging out at the health food store then off the rehearsal for the show that night. We had a great time cruising. The show went great they opened for MIDNITE at the World Beat Center,. I spent the night selling CDs and listening to some great riddims. We got out of there at 0200 and went back to the hotel. Getting to sleep at 0500 and then getting up at 1100 to check out.

We checked out of the hotel and packed up three cars full of rastas and band equipment and drove to Santa Barbara. On the way we stopped in Little Ethiopia in LA to get some food. That was pretty irie. We got to Santa Barbara with about 30 minutes to spare. I spent that night selling more CDs and hanging out. We got done at 0100 and hung out until 0200. I then drove back down to LA airport and dropped off Kaya and Nadia (friends from Kauai) and then headed down to San Diego to drop off my friend at his house. After hours upon hours of driving I made the final jaunt back to my friends in LA. I hung out at his house until Friday June 19th then made my way to Wrightwood California to camp with my mom and step-dad. I drove the 2 hours there and made it to the campsite without falling asleep or driving off the mountain, YAY!!!!:) I set my tent up and crashed for a good 4 hours. My mom and Sam got there and we set up camp. There were bear boxes, bear boxes are needed for this area. OMG

It was fun camping and hanging out but I came here on a mission and my last challenge was tomorrow. I went to bed at 2200 and got a good nights rest…..FINALLY

Angeles Crest 100 Night Training Run June 20th 2009

I left camp at 1200 thinking I would have enough time to hang out and do some work on the internet. WORNG TURN and five hours later I was an hour early at the meeting place and finish for the AC 100. The drive should have only taken me an hour. Anyway I got there and got ready. We then headed to the finish of the run about 1 mile away. We carpooled up to Chantry Flats mile 75 of the AC 100. We had the final 26 miles of the AC 100 course ahead of us and darkness coming on. I rode with Hal Winton, CO-Race Director. Not knowing it at the time but we also got cutoff by my mom and sam heading down form Chantry Flats looking for me. Funny but terrifying experience when on the side of a mountain.

The start was like "there is water stashed up there if you find it good if you don’t take from the streams" now go!!! The front runners marked the course as we went. They did an outstanding job too. The climbs were pretty easy but there were a lot of them. I think I got this race in the bag as long as my knee can hold up. But on this run it took until mile 14 then my knee started to hurt. I ran/walked the downhills and walked the ups for the next four miles. Then I decided F**k it I am not going to kill myself for nothing so I walked the last 8 miles to the finish. All I kept thinking was that bears and mountain lions can sense when some one is injured….So I just kept moving. I was last since some people stopped at mile 14 (where there was an AS on this supposed self-contained run which I was wearing a 10 pound pack on, but enough of that). So I was last and my knee hurt pretty bad, but there was no where to stop and turn around so I just kept pressing on. I got about 3 miles from the finish and my flashlight went dead. So I am on the sided of this cliff and I am alone in the dark in unfamiliar territory and I hear a growling sound, I quickly change batteries and move on, not wanting to see where the sound is coming from. It is about 0400 now and I hear voices and no it is not the "regular" voices I hear but regular voices. I then see lights. I move a little faster and it appears that 2 guys are waiting for me to finish. YEAH!!!!! I finish in 9:30 at 0430 in the morning on June 21st 2009. My first experience on the AC 100 course and I was within cutoff for that section with a hurt knee. Nothing to be too proud of, but I finished it. My California Running Advnenture is over. I walk over to Hal Winton who is asleep in his truck and wave to him to let him know that I came out alive. He nods and says, "See you in September"

I then drive around for about 2 hours looking for a place to sleep because I think it is too dangerous to drive up the mountain at this time of the morning. But, there is no place so instead I make the drive up the mountain and make it to the campsite at 0800 I crash until 1200 then pack up and head back with my mom and sam ahead of me. It takes us about 4.5 hours to drive back to Salinas.

I spend the next day packing up and cleaning my stuff. I get on a plane on June 23 at 0700 and fly to Salt Lake City then to Honolulu.

On Thursday June 25 I had my vasectomy and have been taking off the last week recuperating from the operation. My knee feels better. I believe I am about ready for AC 100 and am up for the challenge. I would like to thank my family for their support, my coach Karl for the training schedules, and HURT for there support as well. Horse Back Riding at Avalons Birthday

Avalon had her birthday at Gunstock ranch and the girls went horseback riding. Malia had a blast. She is becoming a natural. Amy led the horse the whole way(30 min. ride)while I took video and pics. Amy and I did a 5 mile run on Kaunala in preparation for the Top of Tantalus (7m) this saturday. She did really well. I always LOVE running with Amy. I cant wait to do T of T with her. Today Tom and I ran from the start of Peacock 54 at Dillingham to the bottom of Long Road via the Crossover and back. It totaled a little over 22 miles. I dont know though if I was mentally strong enough to do it. I mean I hung in there and pushed through and felt little pain (not really in my knee) but I felt mentally drained by mile 20. I didnt bonk but just felt drained. That is my longest run since Nov. 20 2008 and definitley the toughest. I mean doing 22 up in those mountains is like a 50K or so on a gentle rolling asohalt course. “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optioinal,” David Horton. That is what kept running through my head. Obviously too much pain and you need to stop, but the pain was in my head. Funny, huh!? I think I just need to take some more GU Roctane, that stuff is like crack for athletes!!:) I am going to go to the Angeles Crest course on June 20 for the night training run:) Snakes, Cougars and Bears OH MY!!!! Talk story later. BTW We made another video this one about Long Road it will be up tomorrow……

Day of the Geocache

We did two geocaches today the first one showed us a great view and the second one took us on a hike on the Aiea Loop Trail. Also, the second one was the FIRST Geocache in the state of Hawaii (GC23). We had a BLAST!!! We ascended and descended almost 1000'. I think this is the most funas a family we have had geocaching:) We are going to do the whole 5 mile loop sometime soon. We hiked about 1.5 miles roundtrip. I hope you enjoy the pics, we enjoyed being in them:) I better get some sleep I am running Kaena Point tomorrow. Talk story later. Jah Bless.

Well Amy and I went running at Pupukea today. We did 4 miles on the dirt road with 1290 ft. of ascent to the top. She did GREAT!! I am so proud of her. She is going to love Top of Tantalus on Apr. 14th. It is a 6+m trail run on Tantalus. We are going to do it together. I am so happy she enjoys trailrunning. Greetings Everyone!!! Tom took these photos. He is AWESOME. He has done some great things with the photos. Tell me what you notice different!? Anyways, well my lovely wife, Amy, allowed me some time to run in the evening with my running partner, Tina. Tina and I ran around Salt Lake and Nimitz Hwy. My knee felt great and we kept up an easy conversational pace. We planned alot for this years training. I can’t wait to run some longer distance:) Slowly:) I am planning on the Trail Series and ultimately a finish at AC100 in September and another finish at HURT 100 in January. Also a 16 hour finish at Peacock and maybe a triathlon next month (500m, 20K, 5K). Give Thanks and Jah Bless.

We Got An Aussie:)

Well we bought a puppy and he should be here on Friday. He is coming from the Big island. We have yet to name him. Maybe we will wait to get him to name him. We are soooo excited. He is a pure bred Australian Shepherd. He is going to be a Great running companion. I will update more when we know exactly when he is coming and such:) We also went to the Polynesian Cultural Center yesterday with some of Susan's friends, Aunt Sharon and Betsy. We had alot of fun. Here are a few pictures of us and friends. We have been busy lately. Sorry so short but just wanted to update you.
I have full range of motion and am going to start training in a couple days when I get my schedule from Karl. I have been strengthening my knee and it feels stronger.
Amy finished the Great Aloha Run (8+ Miles) in 1:57. I am so proud of her. She is also doing great in school.
Malia has been on and off with sickness, but she is doing okay. She has been still doing great in school.
Kaili is just growing and growing.

Needing A GU

In the ultrarunning world there are high highs and low lows. And the way out of it for me initially is to take a GU. Well my GU right now is to excercise. Whether it is stretching or strength or whatever. You have to understand, running was something that I was the most passionate about and to take it away I have nothing to sill it with. But, I felt really good after hoppping on the stationary bike at my house. I was only going to go for 5 - 10 minutes but ended up going for 30 minutes until I felt a little, and I mean little, pain. So I hopped off. But it felt great. I felt like crap for most of the day due to minor issues but when I was home and started to excercise I felt that endorphin rush kick in. Whoo hoo!! I think I am bouncing back out of this low low. I also like to talk to my wife and play with my children, they help me out. But my injury has caused that to be in kahootz(fake word?) I cant chase after my Kaili and I can’t really play with my Malia. I can talk to my wife, which does help, after a little calming down. Anyway I feel a little better. Now I must ride. Those endorphins are calling me.

I picked up that mantra in a magazine. I didn't post yesterday because the past few days have been absolutely stressful and filled with appointments to find out what is wrong with me. I guess that running was a major stress relief and not running has caused the stress in my life to boil over. I have been in a major depression and I have been riddled with anxiety. My Primary doctor did a full workup on me yesterday and everything came out fine. I have been having vertigo and other problems that I need to address. I then went to my PT today and am going to start the bike with him on Friday. I did 5 minutes on it today and felt good, physically. I also went to see the pain management psychologist and everything was fine there. I have actually stopped the narcotics and moved onto napoxen and acetaminophen to handle pain including deep breathing and relaxation techniques. After the PM psych I went to see my therapist and we talked for about an hour, I came out enlightened was to the reasons for my depression and anxiety. I won't go into detail but it had alot to do about running and exercising. I am coming down with head cold, so that sucks. Just a bunch of b*tching on my part but what the heck it is a blog about me and my family:) I then went and saw my buddy John, the president of Planet Sun( a kiosk/store that is dedicated to reducing sun exposure and staying hydrated www.planetsunhawaii.com ) and he has had knee surgery before, he told me to stay with the exercises, that it helps, and stay focused in my recovery and I will be out there soon enough. H ehten gave me an Ultimate Direction pouch for my fuel belt and placed a planet sun sticker on my cane and said that I am now an official sponsored athlete on the planet sun team that is in recovery mode. Give Thanks John, many mahalos. Tomorrow is a new day and a new rebirth for this once sullen athlete in recovery. Jah Bless the sunrise. Give Thanks for listening.

Physical Therapy Workout and Surgeon Appt.

I went to see the surgeon today and he said that the tear of my meniscus wasn't too bad. He said that the wounds look really good. He also said that I have arthritis in my knee and since I am an ultrarunner he doesn't know what advice to give me except to take a break when things hurt. To be able to run again he said that I need to walk 2 miles at a brisk pace (15min./miles about)and not hurt same day or next day:) I have now hopped on the stationary bike and it feels great. I have lost 4 pounds in a week and am planning on 10 -15 more to lose. I am feeling good. I have made a video of my workout, not the whole thing continiously but a brief video showing what I am doing. I also do crunches and pushups, which are not in the video. By the way, the Dr. also said that my ACL was fine and my IT band would naturally be a little sore because they had to bend my knee to the side to scope me. Also, my meniscus is pretty thin:( Anyway talk story later. Jah Bless.

Saturday at Grandma Susans

Well we went to Grandma Susans house today after Malias Tahitian Dance Class. We invited Katie and her daughter, Emily, and her sons Drew and Kai over. Also, Gill and Avalon were there. Everyone had a great time. They all went to the beach and swam while I did excercises and talked. Anyway, Malia loves her dance class. The teachers are really nice. Amy has her first tests in her new classes sometime this week. I am still doing my PT at home and am doing great. Kaili is saying lots more words everyday. FUN AFTERNOON

This is the saying of an ultrarunner in the late stages of a run. Pretty funny if you can relate to it:) Anyway we went to Kailua Beach Park today and ate Subway for dinner then we went to Fleet Feet Sports and said hello to Susan, one of the owners. She gave me hug and looked at my knee. She also told me to take it easy and lose weight:) Then after we talked, we were leaving, she gave me a long sleeve Fleet Feet Sports Kailua shirt and told me to "Stay warm:)". Give Thanks Susan. Susan is such a nice lady, she tends to your every need and she makes me happy every time I see her. She wants me to try out the new Montrail Hardrocks at the beginning of next month. She said,"No strings attached I just want your opinion." I said sure and that was that. It makes me feel good that someone values my opinion:)
I am now walking with a cane, to help keep me stable. Although I can bear all weight on my hurt leg, but I am trying ot be careful. So I will probably use it for about another week. The feet picture is of me after training for HURT '02 in December before the race. I know they are BEAUTIFUL:)

Malia was good citizen of the month and today she got her award and certificate. She was Self-discipline and received a free pizza from Papa Johns. Also, today Kaili was all about Shrek and danced her heart out. Check them out. Jah Bless.

I got up and did some of my strengthening excercises. Some of them are:

Hook-lying knee flexion stretch- 10X twice daily

Quadricep Sets- 100X Three times daily

Hamstring Sets- 10X Three times daily

Straight Leg Raise Phase 1- 10-20X Three times daily

Side Lying Hip Abduction- 10-20X Three times daily

Prone Hip Extension- 10-20X Three times daily

Terminal Knee Extension- 10-20X Three times daily

So those are the ones that I am doing now:) Anyway I am feeling much better that I am in recovery and training mode now. 80 Degrees and still going (1st day of PT)

Well the PT (at the VA center for aging:)) said that I should be able to run at least 2 miles in 5.5 weeks:) That is if I do all the stretching and see him twice a week for the next four weeks. It felt good to get it stretched and learn the proper workouts I should be doing. He also did some ultrasound therapy and some electro therapy. He also prescribed me an awesome ice pack that is gel and stays cold for a long time. Also he wants to make me some custom orthotics!? He says that they sould help me with my LONG runs. I am going to be able to drive and do my stationary bike in another week:) I am going to also start doing some core workouts in the morning. I am able to bend my knee 80* as of today. Well talk story later. Angeles Crest 100 here I come!!!:)

I just want to say thanks for the support and all the kind words that people have spoke to me. I will be back to "normal" training by 4-6 weeks. I will not push so hard this time. When it hurts I shall back off. My surgery check-in time is 1000 tomorrow at TAMC. I will be on crutches for about a week. Well better get some rest. TINA FINISHED H.U.R.T. 100K (67 M)

Well all I spent fomr 0330 Saturday to 1200 Sunday at the race I helped out mostly at the Nature Center but then at 0900 Sunday I went over to Paradise Park to my friend finish. Here are some pics and video. Well we had a long day. Malia had her first long Hula lesson and Christmas party (4.5 hours:)) Then we went to Whooville at WAAF. That is where the bouncy was. Her hula halau is a lot bigger than the pic of the girls. That pic is just of the younger girls. As you can see she has a lot of fun at hula. Well only five days until Christmas and counting. Honolulu City Lights Trolley Ride

I am not a Super-human?

I thought I should say what is on my mind on all the places I can post. My firend has pointed alot out about ultrarunning and I want to reach as many people as possible. First of all I would like to thank everyone for their support and concern in my troubled times. I have had something pointed out within my life, "I am
not super-human." Meaning I still have a lot of growing to do to become the
athlete I want to be. I was doing the right thing for HURT 100 '09 (my
fourth attempt at the 100 mile distance) up unitil about October and then I
lost it. I didn't listen. I thought I could be like those fast guys. I
felt like a powerful sportscar on the outside, but on the inside I still had
a 4cyl engine. It took awhile for that engine to burn out and now I am stuck
with a two-legged hobbling engine that only sputters when it starts. I have
really done a number on myself and have come to the conclusion that I need
to start over again. This time a lot slower. I need to think about my future
goals and how I am going to accomplish them. I am pulling out of Angeles
Crest 100 and am probably going to replace that with an easier Kauai
Marathon in September. I need to listen to all the older folks in the
ultrarunning community and learn that you cannot jump to the front of the
pack in a matter of a couple years after a 3 year layoff. If you dont know
what I am talking about take a look at my good friends post on the
www.hurthawaii.com website, it is called Speed Racer and when I read it I
felt as though it was directed towards me and my obvious "young punk"
stubborn ways. If you are looking to become an ultrarunner please take
advice from veterans that have been there awhile. They are still there for a
reason. Ultrarunning is not something you can take lightly and just jump
into. Sure, if you can do a marathon you can probably do a 50k with no
worries but to jump into 100k and 100m takes a lot of preparation and time
in mind and on feet. Hear advice and listen to your body, when your car
starts to spudder pull over and fix it before continuing. I must take
another painpill, as is my life nowadays. My knee hurts. I should find out
this week when I am going to see the orthopedic surgeon and then find out
when my knee surgery will take place. I will be volunteering now instead of
running the HURT 100 and I hope to see some of you there. See you at the aid

Malia had fun having breakfast with Santa yesterday. Even though it was a "fake" Santa, like she said:) She knows though he is one of his many helpers:) Today they got to open gifts from The Webbs of Tennessee. SURGERY IT IS

Well I went to the orthopedist at the VA and he is now sending me to the orthopedic surgeon at Tripler to have surgery. I asked him if I could run HURT 100 and he said that I could do permanent damage. He also said that the injury is probably going to be chronic and that I might not have many years left running like I do. He said to take up swimming (I think he was trying to lighten up the mood). The surgeon is supposed to call me within a week to schedule an appointment. I also have some floating cartilage. I have had surgery on the same knee before and reinjured it a few times in the army. So I have a service connected disability percentage on it and that might bump me up to the front of the line for surgery. On a lighter note I will still be out at HURT to use my volunteering capabilities. I am really bummed that I worked my butt off all year for HURT '09 and it was going to be my year then I stubbornly pushed through the pain that I felt in my knee and kept running. Live and Learn. I am already planning on my next 100 mile attempt next September, Angeles Crest 100;) Guess I really didn't "learn". Thanks everyone for their concern.

Brooks Run Happy Challenge

Well I got an email yesterday from the Brooks Run Happy Challenge that I won the hours excersised for the month of November challenge. I excersised 59.5 hours in 20 days making me the second place person, but the first place person won two of the three challenges making me the one to take the prize. I won my choice of Brooks running shoes (Brooks Trance 8) and a long sleeved tech shirt (Waganui 1/2 zip) my choice. Brooks is so cool. And the sweat365 training website is an awesome place to blog. Mele Kalikimaka At The Zoo

We spent the evening at the Honolulu Zoo's Festival for members and their guests. We had a good time once we got down there after getting a flat tire and having to get a new one. But the day ended nicley with Amy winning us a brunch for two at the Orchid Restaurant at the Kuahelani Hotel. Malia also got to see Santa but was upset that she forgot to give him her picture she drew for him. But we told her he will be around for a while. I know she will be fine. Knee Surgery?

Well found out from my primary doctor that the MRI report showed that I have a "Frayed Meniscus". She told me to rest and wait until I see the orthopedist in a week before I make any decisions. She said that it may require surgery to "shave" the meniscus but the orthopedist will determine that. I have let the race registrar of HURT 100 know that I may drop so someone can fill my spot but to not count me out just yet. I am hoping that it requires surgery and that they do it quickly and I heal fast and am out on the trails again by two weeks so I can do one more long run before HURT. Does that sound irrational? I am not sure, I know that right now (at this moment) I could not run, but with the surgery the pain might go away and I should be able to run soon there after. We will have to see. I have already had surgery on the same knee when I tore my meniscus in 1995 or 96 and they took out cartilage so I am wondering how my knee is going to hold up. I dont want to be 40 and be out of ultrarunning for good, that is when I plan on doing Badwater 135=) Anyway I will keep my chin up and my knee rested and await the final say by the orthopedist. Here is a picture of Me with Malia and Kaili. I have my foot up and am icing my knee. I am trying the good ol' R.I.C.E. method (Rest Ice Compress Elevate). I had my MRI yesterday. They said that they will send the results on Monday, so I might know a little something then. It was pretty cool I got to watch Mythbusters while having my MRI. Then afterwards they gave us some Artesian water form New Zealand with their companys logo on it. They also have mints with their logo on it. I am also posting two pictures of my knee. Well this afternoon I go for my MRI. We will have to see why I am in so much pain:( In the Brooks Run happy Challenge I am in second place for the most calories burned and most hours excersised and there is only one day left:) I am not sure if you get any Brooks gear for second but beings that I was out of it for the last 10 days I feel pretty good:) Amy is almost done with her classes and Malia only has like 2 weeks left. They are both off the same time frame, which is awesome. Kaili has been learining the word "Mine!!" She has been saying that alot. I have another wedding to perform this Wednesday, so that is good especially around the holidays. Malia has no front teeth now, both have fallen out:) The tooth fairy gave her $5 because it was her 5th tooth I gues:) Anyway we hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, we did!! Talk story later. Challenge Day #16

Today Sam and I ran to Monterey from Castroville. A total of 16.8 miles. Sam helped me make a video and I have put it on my http://www.youtube.com/ultradevon page. It is called the Coastal trail video. It was a fun day. VERY HOT!!! But fun none the less. I owe a lot to Sam the man. He rode with me 14 miles, then 15 miles, and then 16 miles all in a row. Last night we got to bed at 0200 then we were up and running at 0845 or maybe 0945, anyway we didn't get much sleep. Tomorrow I fly home to Hawaii. I can't wait to see my girls. All three of them. Anyway I better get some sleep. Talk story later. Oh yeah, there is only 5 of us left in the one.more..mile...challenge. Who will be the last one standing? You will have to wait and see. Jah Bless.

Challenge Day #15

Well I got 15 miles in for the day with Sam along my side on his bike. We did part of the coastal trail from Marina to Sand City and back. I have put two photos up also. One is of Don and Gillian (The Zombies)at Zombierunner in Palo Alto and the other is when we got onto the Coastal trail Sand City section. I just need to say thanks to Sam for riding alongside me for 3 hours keeping me motivated. It made for an easier run. Anyway I better go to bed I have to get up early for a 16 mile run tomorrow. Brooks Run Happy Challenge

Aloha Everyone,

I had sigend up for this other challenge, besides the one..more..mile challenge, called the Brooks Run Happy Challenge. It is a part of the Sweat 365 Training blog that I have. They are sort of a sponsor. Anyway, I just looked at the "leader board" and guess who is leading. Trek To Biens Bench 5+ Miles Video

This is a new video that I made today while out running to Biens bench. I started at Paradise Park on the Manoa Falls Trail. It was beautiful. I got called back early to take Malia to ballet though. But that is okay becasue I got a head cold and was feeling a little under the weather:( I wanted to make it to Nuuanu and back but made it a fun trek to the TOP of Nuuanu and back.
